Dave Duncan clears his points for leaving the team
Dave Duncan, pitching coach of St. Louis Cardinals, is now set to take a leave from the team, as John Mozeliak, general manager of the team, announced it. He also mentioned that there is no fixed time for Duncan’s return as well. Duncan’s wife is fighting with brain cancer and he took a leave earlier when his wife underwent surgery back in August. Derek Lilliquist, who is presently the bench coach of the team, will replace Duncan as the pitching coach. Further, Dyer Miller is chosen for the position of bullpen coach. Earlier, Miller has acted as the pitching coordinator minor league for the team.
Duncan has been on the position of the pitching coach for Cardinals from 1995, when Tony La Russa was the manager of the team. Before this, he was a pitching coach for Chicago White Sox, Oakland A’s and Seattle Mariners from 1982 to 1994. After this announcement, Duncan also clarified two important points officially. The first point is that his wife is doing good, fighting with brain cancer, and then next point is that, he is not resigning because of the resignation of manager Tony La Russa. Duncan also said that he wanted to come back and coach the team in 2012, but the time is not right yet.
It is time, when the spring training is ahead, and with the Jeanine’s treatment going on presently, Duncan realized that she requires his primary attention. The process of Jeanine’s treatment is very complex and requires attention to even the smallest detail. With the kind of progress his wife is making, Duncan did not want to interrupt the process. He understood that he has to be there for her all the time, so that she can gain most benefits out of her treatment, which calls for a very close monitoring.
This makes it clear that Duncan is taking an open-ended leave from the team, and might not be back for 2012. His family and his wife is the first priority for him now, so he has backed off from the team. With Tony La Russa, Duncan coached the Cardinals for the last 33 seasons, which is a pretty long time and he has coached the last sixteen seasons with St. Louis. After the World Series Championship La Russa retired from the team, and many are considering this as a reason for Duncan’s leave. Duncan is still under a contract for the coming season, and the team is working on his replacement for the season.
